Port of Brussels
The Port of Brussels, created in 1993, is a public interest body whose majority shareholder is the Brussels-Capital Region. The other shareholders are the City of Brussels, eight other municipalities (Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, Schaerbeek, Saint-Gilles, Anderlecht, Saint-Josse-ten-Noode, Ixelles, Koekelberg, Etterbeek) and the public limited company Bruxelles-Infrastructures-Finances, a subsidiary of the Société régionale d’Investissement de Bruxelles. This privileged situation gives the port the means to achieve its goals. The port also enjoys wide autonomy which allows it to manage the port facilities in the best conditions.
The Port of Brussels endeavours to be a dynamic port authority which is open to rapid changes in the transport and logistics sector.
The port authority is above all ready to listen to port infrastructure and facility users. The team has the will to modernise the port in close cooperation with all economic stakeholders concerned.
Brussels is the second inland port in Belgium. It is a seaport which is able to accommodate buildings with a capacity of up to 4,500 tonnes. It is accessible 24 hours a day and is situated only five hours from Antwerp via inland navigation. The Port of Brussels has 12 km of wharves along its 14 km waterway. The Port of Brussels is located at the centre of a dense network of motorways and railways, and covers an area of 64 ha.
A European logistics centre
Major European companies have chosen Brussels as a distribution centre for their products in Europe. The advantages of Brussels as a strategic centre are clear: proximity of the decision-making bodies of the European Union, efficiency of passenger transport systems (high-speed train, modern airport connected to the city centre, etc), multilingualism, etc. The Port of Brussels is perfectly integrated into this model. It crosses the city from the north to the south, offering a range of installations located in mainly industrial areas, in close proximity to the historic centre.

The Port of Namur
Meuse and Sambre, sister waterways of the economical and touristic development
The Port Autonome de Namur (PAN) is a body of public interest composed of the association of the Walloon Region, the Province of Namur, the City of Namur, the City of Andenne, the commune of Floreffe and the Bureau Economique of the the Province of Namur. The Port is managing, developing and equipping port areas and industrial areas, which it owns or which were entrusted to the port by the partners. Its mission consists in providing these areas for candidate investors, preferably users of waterways, in the form of a long-term concession contract or in the form of a short-term authorisation.
At the crossroads of the European network of the waterways
Situated along the Meuse and the Sambre on the territory of the Province of Namur, the port areas managed by the PAN are expending on 161 ha. and offer 8 km of quays. All these areas have an excellent road and rail accessibility: they are situated at less than 10 km from a motorway junction and are very near the rail network (the backbone of Wallonia). At the crossroads of the European network of the waterways linking France, Germany and the Netherlands, they benefit from an easy access to the main European ports. The existence of the connection Rhine-Main-Danube enables the ships navigating on the West-European network to get to the East of Europe. The large project of connecting the Seine to the North of Europe offers new perspectives of development of the river traffic to the Île de France. All the port areas of the Port Autonome de Namur are accessible downstream from Namur for ships of 2.000T and to pushed convoys, and upstream from Namur on the Meuse and the Sambre for boats of a minimum of 1.350T
Projects
66 ha. are available for new investors. In total, 21 % of the currently granted surfaces are allocated to activities linked with the river transport, while the remaining 79 % concern industrial, craft and commercial activities, as well as transport activities. PAN’s offer is becoming more and more diversified and is turning toward new buoyant niches. That is why several port areas are in the process of creation and extension.
- Rehabilitation and decontamination of brownfield sites formerly allocated to industrial activities that are nowadays abandoned. In partnership with the Spaque (public company of assistance to the quality of the Environment), the Port Autonome de Namur is refurbishing industrial wasteland ideally situated by the Meuse and rehabilitate former industrial halls to let them at investors’ disposal, preferably users of the waterways. Their refurbishment tries to combine at the best the welcoming of these companies and the respect of the environmental integration.
- Creation of a new quay for the transshipment of household waste by barges to the incinerator INTRADEL in Liege, with the creation, at the backside of this quay, of units of recycling glass and wood waste, as a first step, and of recycling other sectors, such as the packing and the electronic products, in a further stage.
- Creation of a new multimodal platform by the Sambre in Auvelais for the transport of containers of raw material and of finished products of companies situated nearby, such as Solvay, Glaverbel, St Gobain in a first stage. This platform will also be used as logistic platform for future expected developments, on the one hand for the opening of the future river connection Seine North-Europe, and on the other hand for the development of the river traffic of containers linked to the upcoming partnership between the Port of Givet and the Port Autonome de Namur.
- Purchase of territory in Auvelais with the intention of creating an industrial park for companies with an environmental activity and a unit for treating the contaminated grounds. The supply will be done by waterways.
River tourism
The dynamics of the river tourism initiated by the Port Autonome in 2003 is generating positive results: in 2007, 7.117 overnight accommodations of amateur yachtsmen (English, Dutch, French, German and Belgian people) were registered. The Port Autonome de Namur is managing 3 pleasure ports: in Beez, Jambes and Amée, as well as a nautical resting place in Lives on the Meuse. The pleasures ports enable the welcome of boats for stays either for one day of for a week, a month or a season (from 15 April to 15 October). They offer to amateur yachtsmen various services and conveniences: showers and toilets, washing machine, small catering, fuel supply, fixing and wintering opportunities. Regarding the nautical inn, it enables the moorings of the boats for a few days and places water and electricity connecting, toilets and park places at the amateur yachtsmen’s disposal.
