Port of Mannheim

An inland port with wider horizons

fto_manheimAn economic area of key importance: the port of Mannheim.

Consisting of the commercial docks, the Rheinau docks, the Old Rhine docks and the indus-trial docks, the Port of Mannheim is Germany’s largest inland port in terms of size located on the Rhine and the Neckar estuary.

The Rhine – one of Europe’s most efficient waterways – connects Mannheim to international inland and sea ports: in the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Switzerland and via the sea-ports to the rest oft the world. The four harbours provide access to the open sea: a freight ship needs just 26 hours fort he Mannheim-Rotterdam route.

Some 20,000 people work every day in the port of Mannheim. The port is directly linked to the supra-regional road network, it is also directly connected to the economic region, the Rhine-Neckar industrial and technology centre.

Mannheim opened the first container terminal in an inland port back in 1968.

As pioneer, the gantry crane „Titan I“ with a capacity of 32 tonnes for the loading of contain-ers was initially on its own. Since the 1980’s container traffic has boomed: meanwhile there are three cranes on an area of more than 44.000 m² and a quay length of 650 m. The adjacent combined traffic terminal ensures a fast changeover from water to rail. Mannheim thus enters into the competition for the forward-looking container traffic with ideal prerequisites – full power ahead!

The RoRo terminal (Roll-on/Roll-off) provides a direct connection to the water. As the start-ing or end point of the „floating highway“ between Mannheim, Rotterdam and Antwerp it allows the direct transportation of hundreds of vehicles on special ships within hours. The combined terminal facilitates the rapid changeover to rail. The Mühlau docks combined sta-tion serves 47 destinations throughout Europe. With success – the rising stockturn is proof of the growing significance of the rail connection. To ensure that the logistical conditions are in place in Mannheim, state-of-the-art warehouses are also available. The high-performance lo-gistics companies located in the port play an important role in maintaining this standard of service.

The port expects to lift container throughput in the next 15 year to 1.6 million TEU. Investments therefore are permanent. The Düsseldorf terminal is extended with 10,000 m2 and a third crane was installed. The terminal on the, opposite, Neuss side of the Rhine will get two new cranes (RMG’s). The Port of Plochingen

A Transportation Hub and Gateway to the Rhine River and Sea Ports

fto_plochingenPlochingen Port marks both the beginning and the end of the 202 km long Neckar River Federal Waterway. Through the Rhine River and the West German canals, it has a direct connection to the German, Dutch and Belgian North Sea ports, to the Baltic Sea ports and to the most important industrial centres in the Central European waterway network.

The Neckar River Waterway runs from Mannheim through Heilbronn and Stuttgart to Plochingen. The waterway is continually expanded. Today, it accommodates inland navigation vessels with a tonnage of over 2,000 tons. A loaded draught of 2.80 metres and 24-hours river lock passage are additional reasons that make this waterway so attractive for shippers and the economy. The extension of the Neckar River locks for ships up to 135 m in length now planned by the German Federal Government is a measure that will further allow a considerable increase in Neckar River transportation.

In recent years, Plochingen Harbour has rebuilt and expanded its entire rail network. In addition to the waterway and the road system, the companies at the harbour now have access to a third well-developed traffic carrier, the rail system. With regard to hazardous materials transport, the rail network expansion is of considerable importance. For some time now, all the aviation fuel for Stuttgart Airport has been passing through Plochingen Port instead of the former long-distance road transport. The harbour is directly located on the German Railways main route from Stuttgart to Munich.

Plochingen Port is directly connected to the supra-local highway network including the national highways B 10, B 313 and BAB 8. Stuttgart Airport is about a 20 min drive away.
Plochingen is also connected to the Stuttgart urban-transit railway.

The companies located at Plochingen Port are involved in freight transfer, warehousing and processing. All types of bulk goods along with the required freight transfer facilities are to be found here:

  • Iron, steel and wire
  • Chemicals
  • Petroleum industry
  • Concentrated feed industry
  • Fertiliser
  • Grains
  • Building materials
  • Recycled products
  • Cellulose
  • Secondary aluminium smelting plant

In addition, there is a heavy cargo wharf available, approved for loads up to 350 tons.

Plochingen Harbour is under commercial management. About 50 shareholders own shares in the company. The proportion between private industry shareholders and the public sector is 53% to 47%.
