Port of Sevilla
The Port of Sevilla is located in the Guadalquivir river course at about 52 nautical miles from its mouth, a situation that positions him as the only inland port in Spain. The maritime access is via the waterway E.60.02 recorded in the Guadalquivir and is regulated by a lock that maintains a constant draught in the operational basin and is part, by the wall of defense, the protection system of Sevilla against flooding caused by the rising river.
The port is located in the heart of the metropolitan area of Sevilla, with a population of 1.2 million inhabitants, which is the main logistics hub in Southern Spain. The port is linked by multimodal transport corridors allowing a rapid distribution of merchandise to its final destination.
Currently the port operational area covers 400 hectares, organized as follows:
- Maritime facilities: there are 4.125 meters of linear public wharfs, 6 specialized terminals and 4 multipurpose terminals.
- Logistics facilities: (Logistics Activities Area in Batan and Logistics Park of Palmas Altas) counting more than 320,000 m2 of warehouses.
- Industrial Area, with a surface area exceeding 200 hectares housing more than 40 factories and storage facilities.
- Port-city waterfront, reconverted old freight wharfs into recreational spaces, in which urban uses are integrated with cruise traffic.
Maritime traffic.
The port traffic has experienced steady growth in recent years to stabilize around 5 million tonnes. As for the presentation of the goods, solid bulk remains as the predominant form, representing about 50% of total, mainly grain, fertilizers and scrap. The liquid bulk accounts for 5% of the total, mainly oils and chemicals. General merchandise, years has seen a strong increase up to 45% of the total due to steel products and containerized goods.
The increase in general cargo has come with the continuous development of the port regular container and RoRo services network including both maritime and rail, having now (2009) weekly calls to Canary Islands (4), Madrid (5), Northern EU (1), West Africa (1), North Africa (1) and feeder services (1) to main oceanic destinations.
Development Plan
In 2000, the Master Plan for the Port of Seville was adopted, in which it is defined the infrastructure required for future development of the port, responding to the growth of port traffic and changes in the size of the vessel. The most important aspect of this development plan is the construction of new maritime access to the port, consisting on the execution of a new lock 300 meter long and 40 meters wide and deepening of the E.60.02 to 8,5 m operational draught. Additionally, the port expansion project will mean an increase in short-term port area over 250 hectares for the development of new port terminals and logistics and industrial areas. This plan is already under execution being expected to be finished by 2012.
