Vessels calling at the Port of Ochakov pass through the part of Dnepro-Bugsky channel (BDLK) about 8.6 miles and through the port approaching channel (waterway) which is 2.7 miles long and 110 m wide (maximum allowed draft is up to 5.0 m). The port harbor by the area of 12.2 ha is protected with breakwaters in the total length of 820 m.

The total waterfront length is at 800 m. Five berths are put into operations. Berths No.1, 2 by total length of 338 m are designated for general and bulk cargoes. Berth No.1 is equipped with grain transshipment complex to accept river-sea going vessels, DWT up to 5000 t, daily rate – 1000 mt. Berth No. 3, 140 m long, was constructed as an universal ferry dock and allows to operate different types of vessels (including Ro-Ro). Berth No. 4 is specially designed for Ro-Ro type vessels with low ramp (1.40 m high from water level, abt 46 m long) and presently is under reconstruction. Berth No.5 is used for yachts and lighters (small tonnage barges) anchorage by total length of 270 m.

Port storage facilities include: temporary storage warehouse (TWS) No.1 – 8.8 thousand m³, storage place No.2 – 11 thousand m³, storage place No.3 – 3.1 thousand m³, warehouse “Hangar” – area 0.9 thousand m². The temporary storage area for stacked cargoes is 63 thousand m². The port has motor-truck scales with tonnage capacity of 40 ton.

Handling facilities of the port include:

  • grab self-propelled cranes RDK-160, lifting capacity of 16 ton (4 units) and RDK-25, lifting capacity of 25 ton (1 unit), outreach of 10-20 m;
  • truck crane KS-3575, lifting capacity of 10 ton;
  • floating cranes Hanz-16/30 of lifting capacity of 16 ton – 2 units and of lifting capacity 32 ton – 1 unit, outreach up to 30 m, operating in hook and grab-crane modes (possible use for handling containers, unit cargo and bulk material);

Projects for further development

The General plan for development of Port Ochakov Ltd. was accepted and coordinated with local authorities. The concept for the creation of the deep-water port in the Dnieper Estuary delta on the basis of Port Ochakov Ltd. was developed by the State Enterprise ChernomorNII project in collaboration with UkrNIIMF in participation with “CSMK” LLC and State Enterprise "Odeszheldorprojekt".

The plans include construction of three technological complexes: coal-ore, container and grain transshipment complexes. The overall length of eight principal and one auxiliary berths will reach 2700 m, the depth at the first stage will make 11.5 m, at the II stage – 15.0 m. There will be built 5 (including auxiliary one) berths at the first and 4 berths at the second stage of the construction.
The area of the transshipment complexes will make: coal and iron ore terminal – 49 ha, container terminal – 80 ha, grain terminal – 7.0 ha. The open container storage area will cover 22 ha.
The harborage area will be created in two stages: at stage I the vessels will approach the port using the part of the currently existing Bug-Dnieper Estuary Canal (leg 1-4) of the depth of 11.2 m and then – by 4 km long approaching channel of 11.5 m deep; at stage II the harborage area will be expanded and the approaching channel depth will be increased up to 15 m. At that, the depth at the berth will be increased up to 18.0 m.

The estimated port capacity of Port Ochakov Ltd. as per two stages of construction is as follows:

  • Stage I (2012) – bulk cargoes 7 million ton (including coal –1 million ton, iron ore raw materials – 5 million ton, grain – 1 million ton); Containers – 0.5 million TEU.
  • Stage II (2017) – bulk cargoes 21 million ton (including coal – 6 million ton, iron ore raw materials – 13 million ton, grain – 3 million ton); Containers – 2 million TEU.
  • The distance between Ochakov and Odessa is 130 km. The port has a 75 km auto route connection to Nikolaev railway station. A project of 58 km railroad spur construction has been developed to link the port to the main railway system.
