First Sustainability Award of Antwerp Port Community goes to ambitious ECLUSE project

Good news about our ports

22 November 2016

During an Award ceremony on 16 November 2016, the Antwerp Port Community has presented its first Sustainability Award to the ECLUSE Project. The ECLUSE project for a heat distribution network will ultimately account for 10% of “green” heat produced in Flanders.

ECLUSE aims to build a heat distribution network that will replace the natural gas-fired energy supplies of several chemical companies. The heat, in the form of steam, will come from the waste-to-energy facilities operated by the INDAVER waste processing company and its joint venture SLECO. The network itself will be constructed by Infrax. Once the project is fully operational, the steam will be used directly by the industry as much as possible, which will be very energy-efficient. Consequently, ECLUSE will be one of the largest industrial heating clusters in Europe, which will make a significant contribution towards achieving Belgium’s targets under the Paris climate treaty.

The Sustainability Award is an initiative of Antwerp Port Authority, the Left Bank Development Corporation and VOKA-Alfaport (Chamber of Commerce). These players have been working together in the field of sustainability since 2011 with the publication of their Sustainability Report. As of 2016, the ambition to remain the leader in creating sustainable added value is further emphasised with the biennial presentation of a Sustainability Award. For the Sustainability Award 2016, 20 companies submitted a project. Out of these projects, the jury selected a shortlist of four: ECLUSE, Gyproc, BASF Antwerp and Qpinch.
