Upgrade of Gabčíkovo locks

Good news about our ports

06 February 2019

The first major milestone of the project “Upgrade of Gabčíkovo locks” has been reached on 31st January 2019, with the signature of the contract valued at €149,997,450 excluding VAT. The project is co-funded by the European Commission through the CEF (Connecting Europe Facility) programme.

Modernisation works on the locks are expected to start in April or May 2019, the first major improvements to the locks since 1992. Work will be first carried out on the right lock chamber. This will not prevent navigation, which will continue through the other lock chamber. One of the plans of the project is to replace the upper segments of the gates separating the lock from the upstream channel. The system filling and emptying the locks will also undergo a series of modifications.

The upgrade of the locks, which are located on the Danube in Slovakia near the Hungarian border, aims to improve the reliability and safety of the locks, decrease the passage time and allow for a more stable and fluid navigation.

Metrostav a. s., the contractor who won the international tender for the contract, is expected to finish the upgrade of the right lock after 510 days, and to take 415 days to finish the modernisation of the left lock.
