Waterwegen en Zeekanaal nv and nv De Scheepvaart merge into De Vlaamse Waterweg nv

Good news about our ports

10 January 2017

In January 2017, Waterwegen en Zeekanaal nv and nv De Scheepvaart started to merge into De Vlaamse Waterweg nv. The merger will be completed by January 2018. The new public agency will manage and develop all the navigable Flemish waterways.

The two companies fulfil very similar functions, but they are active in different regions. Waterwegen en Zeekanaal nv manages the navigable waterways in West and East Flanders, in Flemish Brabant and in a part of Antwerp. The waterways in the other part of Antwerp and in Limburg are managed by nv De Scheepvaart. Thanks to the merger, the knowledge and expertise of both companies will be centralised, which will result in more uniformity towards the customers.

The mission of De Vlaamse Waterweg nv is to manage and develop the Flemish waterways as a powerful network that contributes to the economy, the prosperity and the quality of life in Flanders. It doesn’t merely focus on waterborne transport, but it also takes into account the people living around the waterways.
