Port of Galati and UPIR Romania

Galați's port is the largest river and seaport on the Danube and the second largest in Romania. Located in the city of Galati, the port is an important source of income for the city. The position of the port of Galati as a sea and inland waterway port on the TEN-T Core Network on the Rhine – Danube corridor represents a significant opportunity that attracts many national and international companies operating here.

Among these we mention:

          • Damen Group, a Dutch company that owns the Galați shipyard, having as activity naval constructions.
          • ArcelorMittal, the largest integrated plant in the country and a leader in the manufacture of steel products.
          • Metaltrade - port operations through Port Bazinul Nou SA and Docuri SA companies.

The port of Galati has 3 port zone :

• Bazinul Nou Port – this port is part of the port complex of Galati, being the largest Romanian port on the Danube, which can operate ships in both river and sea traffic.
• Docuri Port – located on the left bank of the Danube, at nautical mile 80 and offers a wide range of services, with storage capacity, mechanical means of handling, lifting, transport and stacking of goods, being specialized in traffic of bulk goods and cereals.
• Mineral Port – this port was built in 1974, being the only mineral port in Galati and has a strategic importance for the operation of the steel plant, being the main transit gate for raw materials, but also for finished products.

Thanks to its strategic location on the eastern border of the European Union and the two types of railways (standard and wide gauge), the port of Galati can position itself on the market as a land and maritime point of entry into the European Union.
This attracts freight flows transported between the European Union countries and countries in the Eastern European Union or Asia.

The most important project that is under implementation in the port of Galati is the Multimodal Platform – removing major bottlenecks by upgrading existing infrastructure and providing missing link for the Rhine – Danube/Alpine core network.

The overall objective
of the Project aims to strengthen the contribution of inland waterways and inland ports to a sustainable European freight transport network through a better integration of the port of Galati into the Rhine-Danube multimodal corridor and the multimodal logistics chain.

Specific objectives of the Project:

Improve the intermodal capacity of the port up to a maximum annual capacity of 150.000 TEU/year.
Modernisation of basic port infrastructure.
Creation of a new platform and improvement of the existing shore platform for storage and stacking operations.
Integration of modern intermodal facilities into the 'multimodal platform' concept, capable of handling intermodal loading units such as ISO containers, swap bodies and crane-handling compatible semi-trailers.
Removal of the road block on the E87 county road connecting to the TEN-T road network.

The integrated project includes 4 sub-projects corresponding to the identified investment objectives, namely:

Port infrastructure modernisation - Phase I.

Modernisation of the road infrastructure in the Multimodal Platform area to remove traffic bottlenecks and relocation of a railway segment to improve the rail traffic flow in the port area - Phase II.

Reorganisation and reconstruction of the handling and storage area to streamline the technological flow in the platform- Phase III.

Creation of a new access to the handling and storage area to comply with European safety and security standards - Phase III.

The project will increase efficiency and sustainability for port operations and multimodal transshipments in the port of Galati by improving cargo flows between the Black Sea and inland countries of Central Europe, as well as between Eastern and Western Europe.

Due to its position on the Danube River and its strategic position as a gateway or turntable for the countries of the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine and Black Sea connections such as Turkey and Greece, the project location proves ideal for connecting inland navigation, road and rail transportation.
