On 26-27 March 2026, EFIP's members gathered in Prague for their General Assembly Meeting.
1. Can you give us a short introduction of the Cesko-saske pristavy and SBO GmbH?
The Port Group Saxony Inland Ports and Cesko-saske Pristavy is a public port organization. In 2002 the Cesko Saske Pristavy was acquired from SBO. The group is one of the largest Port area in Germany and works from Berlin to Prague. The Group is not only a Port authority, but also a full logistics provider with trucks, trains, trailers and and expertise in logistics processes. They can organise the complete process between the customers and Seaports. Each of the six owned ports has been developed for regular requirements. The Port of Dresden is specialised with heavy goods and has a crane with lifting capacity from 600t and it is also a trailerport, Lovosice also handles heavy cargo and serves as a central handling facility for grain, wood and fertilizer. The Port of Riesa is a terminal for Containers, Trailers, as well as a port for agricultural products. Torgau, Mühlberg and Decin are multipurpose ports
Every ports except, Mühlberg, are trimodal. The Port group estimate approximately 3 million tons per year, generating approximately 25 million euros annually. Around 140 people work directly for the group, while more than 2000 people work here in the company. The group is an important economic factor in both Saxony and the Czech Republic.
2. What makes the Elbe distinct from river basins ?
The Elbe is unique due to variations in the water levels and water availability. The group must identify the fastest and most cost-effective transport method to the ports. The main goal is to ensure that every shipment arrives at its destination on time.
3. The European Port Strategy aims to make ports competitive and economically relevant, how should the Strategy support the Elbe ports?
The port group already operates economically successfully. Nevertheless, future growth requires support from the EU. Investments in quays, rail infrastructure, and vessels are indispensable and cannot be realized by the ports alone. Smart and sustainable approaches are necessary to support the entire regional economy and promote strategies for sustainable transport.
