Press Releases
21 October 2024
The European Federation of Inland Ports(EFIP) mourns the loss of Willy Robijns, a dedicated leader and passionate advocate for inland ports, who passed away on 17 October. As the former and longest serving president of EFIP, Willy left an indelible mark on the organisation, the industry, and all those fortunate enough to have worked alongside him.
Willy’s leadership of EFIP was characterized by his unwavering commitment to strengthening Europe’s inland port network and promoting sustainable transport solutions. He tirelessly advocated for the strategic importance of inland ports in the European logistics chain, understanding their vital role in fostering regional economies, improving environmental outcomes, and supporting Europe's transition to greener modes of transport. For many EFIP members Willy has remained a friend.
Throughout his career, Willy was known for his clear vision, diplomacy, and determination. He championed collaboration and built strong relationships across Europe. This was exemplified in 2009, when Willy played a crucial role in bringing the establishment of a joint ESPO-EFIP secretariat, which gave both organisations a strong foundation of cooperation and growth for year to come.
His ability to navigate the complex challenges facing the European inland ports earned him great respect among his peers, who admired not only his professional achievements but also his warmth, integrity, and deep personal commitment to our sector. EFIP was very honoured to have him commemorate our 30 anniversary with us.
His legacy at EFIP is one of leadership, resilience, and a profound belief in the potential of European inland ports to drive sustainable growth and innovation. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones.
